A slogan can say it all and at McNellie’s their slogan is “Probably Tulsa’s Best Pub.” Yet, in McNellie’s case they are being too modest. When it comes to beer, no one beats them. This public house boasts 60 beers on tap and over 200 available in bottles. That’s a lot of beer. Pick up the beer menu and feast your eyes on the variable cornucopia of choices arranged by country and check out the monthly specials. Prices vary from three dollars for the more familiar beers all the way up to ten for the outlandish beers like “Snow Cougar” which is bottled in a 16 ounce bottle with awesome stalking cougar graphic and hails from Russia. Liquor and mixed drinks are also available but with so many beers to try, it’s just not fun ordering a vodka and Red Bull. If you have to be up early the next morning and aren’t up to a night of being a beer connoisseur, McNellies still has you covered. Pick between fish and chips, thick burgers, or try the spinach dip or other appetizer. The Memphis burger is a must try. Wednesdays offer three dollar burger nights but be prepared to wait for a table if you go at the normal dinner hour. Also don’t forget the sweet potato fries. This crispy creation is both sweet and salty, and maybe even more famous than the huge wall of beer taps. Downstairs is nonsmoking but upstairs its free game. Upstairs also boasts a large game room complete with shuffle board, darts, foosball, and pool.
McNellie’s is located at the corner of 1st and Elgin downtown and can be reached by phone at 918-382-PINT. There’s free parking directly east in a spacious gravel lot. McNellie’s is leading the way to the revitalization of downtown Tulsa and especially the Blue Dome District. Go out and support local Tulsa businesses and happy drinking.
Just to add on to this awesome review by my bro Noah. I’ve got to say that the Memphis burger is awesome. Its enough meat to give you a heart attack topped with hickory barbecue. I exchanged the fries with mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy. Dang! My mouth is watering, I gotta go.

When I say a different kind of biker bar, I’m not kidding. The Soundpony is devoted to bicycling enthusiasts. The walls are adorned with bicycle frames, and even a picture of Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. I was impressed with the dankness and comfortable “hole in the wall” feeling that this bar had even though its a fairly new establishment. The bartenders were great and the restrooms clean. My glass never went dry. I enjoyed the $1.50 PBR on tap, do not call it Pabst Blue Ribbon, for some reason this offends the locals. Shots range from 4 to 10 bucks. I had Sauza Tequilla right out of a Sauza Tequilla machine which came out sweet and cool, I paid the 5 bucks just because I just had to see that wonderful machine operate. The patrons of this bar are some of the most interesting conversation you will have. The Soundpony also features free live shows to original artists.
The Soundpony is located at 409 N Main in the historic Brady District of downtown Tulsa right next to the historic Cain’s Ballroom. Their website is www.myspace.com/soundponylounge and their phone number is 918-582-PONY(7669).
I was headed home a few weekends ago and came across a great new pub here in Tulsa, Willie’s Bar located at 3161 S 129th East Ave… between Duffy’s and the Seoul Korean - Japanese market - diagonally across from Warehouse Market. (31st and 129th)
Willies has 4 pool tables, 2 dart boards and the only jukebox I have found in Tulsa that has both Garth Brooks and my personal favorite, Billy Joel!
No brews on tap at this time, but a bottle of most domestic beer is 2.00 and you can buy a Bud and a shot of just about anything for $4.00.
On Friday nights Willies features live LOCAL musical entertainment and on Saturdays it’s OPEN MIC night.
The staff is friendly and the crowd is made up of some great local Tulsans… the hard working class, most of whom live near Willies.
The crowds are small right now at Willies but I don’t expect that to last too long, because with the great bartenders on staff and the friendly clientele, Willies is sure to become a favorite!
