Salsa Rythym Project

It’s a warm night and the musicians take to the stage. Tim Shadley strikes a few notes on the Piano, Frankie Ramierez Willie Conde and John Dellavedova set the rhythm, Rich Fisher and Dave Johnson groove in the horn section. Tom Shannon’s flute is heard again and from upon high in heaven, the legendary Ray Baretto smiles - Salsa is re-born!

tim.jpgWe’re not on a moonlit beach in Puerto Rico, Cuba or anywhere in the Caribbean…. We are in Tulsa, Oklahoma mesmerized by the hypnotic sounds of ‘Salsa Rhythm Project’. These musicians come from different parts of the world and all share the love of Salsa.

The last time I heard Salsa this good was when I was in Puerto Rico a few years ago. I was working for American Airlines Vacations doing a review of a new hotel. I took a trip into Old San Juan and visited ‘Rumba’ - one of the best salsa clubs in the area. I don’t recall the name of the band but listening to them play was a great way to take in all that is Puerto Rico.

Salsa Rhythm Project takes the best of Tulsa local art and mixes it with driving percussion and a dance groove that thankfully, Tulsans can hear almost every weekend.

The Caribbean influenced sounds of Salsa Rhythym Project electrify patrons at many of Tulsa’s great music venues such as The Continental, Ciao, The Blue Dome and the new outdoor stage at Plan B.

Salsa Rhythm Project will be performing at this years Waltz on the Wildside at the Tulsa Zoo on June 20th.

I highly recommend this ‘Tulsa Original’ group - Salsa Rhythm Project.

Once, twice, three times a Mundi

This past weekend was a Citizen Mundi flavored delight. Citizen Mundi played Friday night at The Gray Snail Saloon and played to an electrified crowd for over 3 hours. Playing songs from their CD release ‘No Translation’, they made this small venue sound like a large concert hall. Patrons of the Gray Snail, some of them hearing Mundi for the first time, danced all night long to the rhythms. Mike Drummond and Ryan Tedder did an outstanding job playing horns, punctuating the music of Mundi and moving in synch together while Jean-Michel lead the band as he always does, with style, flair and exhuberance. Keeping the bands time at bay was Canuto and Sergio, Wilfredo worked up a sweat playing keys - he literaly got off a plane from L.A. just an hour or so before playing to a packed pub. Mundi bass player Eric Bass, solidifed the band’s sound and moved in synch with Jean-Michel.

Saturday night, Mundi played with another Tulsa favorite, Sam and The Stylees, down again on Cherry Street at Kilkenny’s first annual block party. Both bands played hard and loud, moving the crowd all night long. Both Mundi and Sam and the Stylees picked up some new fans yet again. These two bands play together often. Offstage, both bands members are friends. Sergio and Canuto from Mundi danced and partied to Sam and The Stylees music with several of their friends. Tulsa musican Garret Overstreet was there enjoying both permances as was Dixie Tavern bartender, The adorable Andy.

Thursday, September 13th will feature Citizen Mundi, Sam and The Stylees, Ghosts, The Hosty Duo and Travis Kidd at River Parks West Amphitheater. Free food and free beer (21+) for attendees. The entertainment starts at 6PM and will continue till 11PM and beyond. For more details visit OurRiverEyes.com .

The Soundpony - A Different Kind of Biker Bar

When I say a different kind of biker bar, I’m not kidding. The Soundpony is devoted to bicycling enthusiasts. The walls are adorned with bicycle frames, and even a picture of Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. I was impressed with the dankness and comfortable “hole in the wall” feeling that this bar had even though its a fairly new establishment. The bartenders were great and the restrooms clean. My glass never went dry. I enjoyed the $1.50 PBR on tap, do not call it Pabst Blue Ribbon, for some reason this offends the locals. Shots range from 4 to 10 bucks. I had Sauza Tequilla right out of a Sauza Tequilla machine which came out sweet and cool, I paid the 5 bucks just because I just had to see that wonderful machine operate. The patrons of this bar are some of the most interesting conversation you will have. The Soundpony also features free live shows to original artists.

The Soundpony is located at 409 N Main in the historic Brady District of downtown Tulsa right next to the historic Cain’s Ballroom. Their website is www.myspace.com/soundponylounge and their phone number is 918-582-PONY(7669).

Citizen Mundi - LIVE at Boston’s in Tulsa

I was looking for something to do Friday night and saw that Citizen Mundi was scheduled to play at Boston’s here in Tulsa.

Boston’s is a small venue but perfect for the high energy crowd that turned out in full force to see Tulsa’s original International Band, Citizen Mundi. Jah Roots opened for Citizen Mundi and got the crowd dancing in no time playing some great reggae to a crowd aged between 21 and 35.

This was my first time seeing Citizen Mundi play live anywhere in the Tulsa area, though they have played some of Tulsa’s top venues such as Cain’s Ballroom, Fishbonz and Kilkenny’s.

The energy level was high and many in the crowd appeared to be Mundi regulars, knowing all of the lyrics of the bands songs. The band played all of the songs off of their latest CD release, “No Translation”

The Seven band members played their hearts out from 11PM till 1:30AM without taking a break. The bar was full and everyone towards the front of the stage all the way to the back of Boston’s, danced from the time Citizen Mundi started playing, all the way to the end. While many small venues tend to have unbalanced sound due to poor acoustics, it seems as if Boston’s sound man had the right mix of highs and lows to bring out the best in the band. I walked around the floor starting from the stage, moving to the back and then back to the front, and I was able to hear the vocals well, the horn section was vibrant and uncluttered, the keyboards were piped through at the right level to blend well with the bass guitarist and the the guitarist could be heard clearly even when the drummer and percussionist were keeping the band in time. The percussionist and drummer by the way, were both outstanding…. These guys sound as if they’ve been playing together for more than the few years they have.

One of the things I admire most about Citizen Mundi is their LACK of cover songs during their shows. Many bands throw in a cover song or two to please a crowd that may not be familiar with a bands original material but Citizen Mundi has so many great original songs that covers are just not needed to fill their sets.

I am absolutely sure that if you have never heard Citizen Mundi… once you do, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t before! This bands music is magic, infectious and all around a lot of fun to watch and listen too - This Boston Avenue venue and this original Tulsa band were made for each other Friday night. I haven’t seen so many smiling, dancing faces in one venue in a long time. CDs and T-Shirts are always on sale at Citizen Mundi gigs. Oh and if late night weekends don’t work out for you, you can always check out Citizen Mundi acoustic on Mondays at Boston’s!
