I came across an artist by the name of Shannon Thomas recently and have found that this young song writer is accumulating fans at a fast pace. She describes her music as fitting into the Pop genre and I find it to be quite soothing and a breath of fresh air compared to some of the nonsense we here on Pop radio.
I am not knocking all of pop radio per se, but Shannon Thomas’s music is closer to what I wish pop stations would play - her music tells a story, not much unlike the way the crooners from the 40’s and 50’s did - Artists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Bille Holiday from that era sang from the heart. In the 70s and 80s Billy Joel was my favorite because of his ability to tell stories through music. In the 90’s my faves were Phil Collins and Martina McBride. I love all styles of music - everything from classical to techno with rap and hip hop in my own collection too… but what I love about Shannon Thomas is that this young performer has put to words and music, her own experiences in life and I think she is touching the hearts of many with her debut release ‘Brainstorms’.
Shannon writes from the heart and it’s evident that Shannon has injected her own personal spin on her own relationships and sometimes heartache into her music…
Here is a line from her song entitled, ‘Edward’ from her current album release:
“Did Edward know I wanted him bad
I just couldn’t show the feelings I had
Did Edward see in me what I saw in him
‘Cause it was everything, it was everything
When summer came, I knew that it was surely over
We’d graduate & I wouldn’t find a four leaf clover
And if he wanted me the same way that I wanted him
There was no, there was no indication
But did he know?did he know?
Did he know that he was the only boy I needed….”
Here is a portion of her lyrics from ‘More Than Meets The Eye’
“You can’t walk away from me once I get inside your head
You might not be listening, but soon you will
Don’t look past me before lookin’
Into a future without lovin’
Could you handle the regret & do it alone
Chorus:
You say you don’t need me
I never cross your mind
You say you’re doin’ fine
I know that’s a lie
If you will give it time
I will solidify
The many reasons why
There’s more than meets the eye”
Shannon has put to words and music, the thoughts and feelings of her generation when it comes to budding young love and she isn’t afraid to sing about the despair or doubt that love can also bring.
Some major artists have commented about Shannon, including Grammy award winner David Teegarden who said of Shannon, “(Shannon is) A talent to be reckoned with. A truly great voice. Lookout, this girl’s destined to really go places.”
Pat Penatar said “Shannon’s music is fabulous!”
Shannon Thomas’s fan base stretches as far away as South America, Europe and Australia.
